Biography

Gita Deneckere (b. 1964) is full professor in the Department of History at Ghent University and, since 2018, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at her alma mater. She received her doctorate in history in 1993 with a dissertation on social history and collective action in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her current research focuses on the history of power and emancipation. The history of the women's movement and feminism is a major line of research. Deneckere has been a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium (KVAB), Humanities Class, since 2013. In 2011, the Bezige Bij published “Leopold I. The First King of Europe”, awarded in 2013 the triennial Henriëtte de Beaufort Prize for the best literary biography in the Low Countries and in 2014 the triennial Prix Jean Stengers of the Académie Royale de Belgique. Deneckere is known as a committed historian who combines scholarly depth with a visual, narrative writing style.
