VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research, BE

Following undergraduate studies in the Biological Sciences and Chemistry with honors at Cornell University (USA), Savvas obtained a PhD in Biophysics at Cornell University (USA) in 2000. He pursued post-doctoral research in structural biology at Washington University School of Medicine (USA), and in 2002 transitioned his research/academic career to Europe as EMBO Research Fellow at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the VIB (Belgium). In 2005 Savvas was appointed to the Faculty of Sciences at Ghent University (Belgium) where he currently serves as professor of Structural Biology and Biophysics. Starting in January 2015, his research group joined the Inflammation Research Center at the VIB (Belgium). Savvas’ research group employs integrative structural biology approaches to investigate the structural and mechanistic principles underlying the assembly, activation and (patho)physiology of protein complexes pivotal to immunity, inflammation, autoimmune diseases and cancer.
