Biography

Janna SAARELA, MD., PhD., is Research Director, Deputy Director of Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland, FIMM, and Head of the FIMM Technology Centre. She is also Adjunct Professor in Medical Molecular Genetics at the University of Helsinki. Dr. Saarela was a postdoctoral fellow at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Dept. Human Genetics in the laboratory of Prof. Leena Peltonen. Her current research interest is in genomics of immune disorders, especially autoimmunity and immune dysregulation (https://www.fimm.fi/en/research/groups/saarela). She has set up the Biomedicum Biochip Center microarrays core unit in 2001 and co-coordinated until 2008. Since 2009 she has significantly driven FIMM research and translation by design, implementation and integration of 10 technology-based units of the FIMM Technology Centre and the biobank infrastructure. She is an invited expert in several international scientific networks: EU-LIFE, International MS Genetics consortium (IMSGC), IC Personalized Medicine consortium, European Network on Rare Immunodeficiency, Autoinflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases (ERN RITA) Molecular Testing working group, and the European expert group for clinical NGS sequencing.
