Martin Pilhofer was born in Amberg, Germany. He studied Biology (Microbiology/Biochemistry/Genetics) at the University of Bayreuth and the Technical University Munich. After completing his PhD thesis with Karl-Heinz Schleifer at the Technical University Munich and postdoctoral training with Grant Jensen at the California Institute of Technology, he joined ETH Z├╝rich as an Assistant Professor in February 2014. The Pilhofer Lab studies macromolecular machines mediating bacterial cell-cell interactions by applying the key-technique cryoET in an interdisciplinary approach. Among a number of research and equipment grants, Martin was awarded a Starting Grant from the European Research Council.
