Rudi Beyaert obtained a Master (1986) and PhD (1992) in Sciences – Biotechnology at the University of Ghent (Belgium), where he is full Professor in Molecular Biology since 2003. He also serves as Deputy Director of the VIB Center for Inflammation Research, where he is heading the Unit of Molecular Signal Transduction in Inflammation. So far, he has supervised 37 PhD students and more than 30 postdocs. Prof. Beyaert (co)authors over 250 research papers that received more than 17200 citations (h-index of 70). He is inventor on several patent applications and his work has been recognized by a number of awards, including the five-yearly Prize of Fundamental Medical Sciences of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine.
The thematic area of his group is centered around molecular mechanisms that regulate inflammation and immunity. His research has set the groundstone for a number of extraordinary discoveries, including the role and mechanism of action of A20 and ABINs as key regulators of inflammation, and the identification of the protease MALT1 as a key player in immunity and cancer, which now forms the basis of many research and translational efforts worldwide.
